CPR FACT SHEET SKILL SHEET (Revised New 2000)
Below you will find the basic steps that will make CPR easier to remember. These steps are to make the layperson more at ease while striving to perform CPR. This information should be helpful. Formal classroom practice on manikins makes learning easier.
STEP 1. CHECK AREA/VICTIMS FOR ANY DANGERS AND FOR RESPONSIVENESS. CALL FOR ASSISTANCE!
Make sure that it is safe for you to approach the injured person. LOOK FOR ANY HIDDEN DANGERS. Make sure the person that you are checking for any injuries is either responsive or unresponsive On Adult/Child shake by the shoulders, On Infant shake the foot and ask, Are you okay? If No Response .Call for Help!
STEP 2. OPEN THE (A)IRWAY.
Use the head/chin lift method (one hand on the forehead, two fingers under bony part of chin ), DO NOT LIFT THE NECK as this may cause further injury if the person has sustained a head neck or back injury.
STEP 3.CHECK FOR (B)REATHING.
Place you ear over the injured person's mouth about 1/2 inch away, and watch the chest for rise. Check this 5 seconds. If your injured person is not breathing: INFANT- cover the infant's mouth and nose with your mouth, and give 2 slow gentle breaths, on CHILD/ADULT pinch, block or cover the nose and give 2 slow regular breaths, (Use Bag/Valve mask or alike if available) DO NOT FILL the stomach with air. If the air DID NOT GO IN-REOPEN AIRWAY: IF AIR STILL DOES NOT GO IN BEGIN STEPS FOR CHOKING. (SEE CHOKING STEPS SHEETS )
STEP 4. CHECK FOR (C)IRCULATION AND LIFENESS
Check the pulse for 10 seconds, (you have 10 seconds to find the pulse). INFANT find the brachial pulse located on the upper inside are between the muscles, CHILD & ADULT find the carotid pulse on the side of the neck closest to you, trace with 2 fingers from the adam's apple down to the groove of the neck. Look for any signs of Life, movement, coughing, etc.. If you do not find a pulse, begin CPR. Use AED's if available.
STEP 5. BEGIN EMERGENCY RESCUE STEPS.
1. RESCUE BREATHING, 2. CPR, 3. FIRST AID
CALL 9-1-1/EMS; If CPR is to be performed on an ADULT, CHILD OR INFANT (CALL FIRST) call immediately and begin your steps, If YOU SUSPECT A DROWNING, SUBMERSION OR POISONING, TRAUMA OR RESPIRATORY ARREST BEGIN EMERGENCY STEPS FIRST THEN (CALL FAST) CALL 9-1-1, (If someone arrives tell the person what you think are the immediate dangers or injuries and have them go call call 9-1-1.

STEP 6. RECHECK AFTER A MINUTE.
RECHECK The PULSE and LIFENESS for 5 seconds if they have a pulse RECHECK the BREATHING for 5 seconds, then resume your necessary steps. If they're not breathing continue rescue breathing, if they do not have a pulse continue CPR. NEVER PLACE YOURSELF IN DANGER TRYING TO RESCUE SOMEONE. YOU NEED TO MAKE THE AREA SAFE FOR THE EMERGENCY RESCUE PERSONNEL.
